Every car on the road in the UK must be insured, as per the law. But insurance for teenagers can be incredibly expensive, especially because they are known to be more reckless drivers. This is not some form of urban legend, but statistics and research show that 17 to 18 year olds are much more likely to claim from insurance (over 40 percent of claims are within this age bracket).
Furthermore, teenagers and under 25's are more likely to be caught for drink driving, and most of these convictions are usually male. Generally, most accidents on the UK roads involve young people and are caused by young people.
The statistics are in favour of the girls, but generally with teenagers insurance companies are still not willing to take much more of a risk. The ladies are generally more careful on the road, will break the law a lot less, and usually don't drink drive. But nevertheless, car insurance for teenagers – girls and guys – is incredibly expensive.
Teenagers can look to getting cheap car insurance through doing a few things. Firstly, if they sign up with an advanced driving course (the Pass Plus is the most recommended) teenagers can get much more confident on the road and also can see insurance price drops of 12 to sometimes 42 percent.
The Pass Plus gives its students instruction in driving in different road conditions, different weather conditions, as well as motorway driving, dual carriageway driving, rural and town driving. All of these different scenarios are important to know, and having confidence on the road allows for long term benefits.
This is because many insurance companies are rewarding young drivers for having a good record. Many can claim a no claims bonus within a year, or see a 40 percent reduction in premiums just by having a one year no claims record.
Teenagers can also get cheaper car insurance by ensuring that they don't get themselves a high performing or fast car. Saloons are usually the best choice, as they are modest cars, and modesty is usually what the insurance companies like. (An added benefit is that you do save on fuel with these kinds of cars.)
By adding an immobiliser, alarm, or even a krooklock, teenagers can drop their insurance premiums even further. Like above, modified cars are not recommended.
Teenagers, or their parents, should also consider the kind of insurance cover available to them. Fully Comprehensive can be very expensive and is also usually not needed – the car may not be so expensive, so insurance could cost more than the value of the car. For this reason, Third Party Fire & Theft or Third Party Only are the best choice. In fact, usually Third Party Only is the best choice but at least with Third Party Fire & Theft the car is covered in case it gets stolen – which might also be a real possibility. But it all depends on the value of the car.
Teenagers, or their parents, should keep all this in mind when looking for car insurance.
